What an amazing read; there is nothing left to write about Palestine. Susan Abulhawa stole it all, and robbed the rest of opportunity. This book is akin to "house of the spirits" by Isabelle Allende, but even more incisive into the human experience. For this to be a debut novel by an author trained in neuroscience, not literature, makes it a miracle. So much emotion must have worked its way through the author, and thank goodness she shares it so openly with us. Like feeling privileged to see a great movie for $8, it is an amazing to obtain all this powerful material and interact with it for the price of a paperback book. Thank you Abulhawa, what a truly Palestinian expression of love and struggle you offer.

This is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and touching fictional work s that I have read in a long time. Ms. Abulhawa is a gifted storyteller. Her words are sheer poetry and make you feel as if you are there, experiencing each moment of the story. Do not pass up the opportunity to add this book to your library.
Painfully Beautiful Book
I don't know if I've ever read a book that touched my heart so strongly. It's hard for me to believe that this is a work of fiction. The characters have lived, loved and died in my heart with all the tenderness and pain of a true life story. I am an American woman of 68, born at the end of the atrocities of WW 2 and far too young to understand the politics and decision making that went into the gifting of Palestine to the Jews. I have read extensively about the destruction and death of so many in Hitler's death camps. However, I have never even seen or considered anything relating to the process of wrecking the lives and families of those in Palestine to achieve the Jewish state of Israel. Ms. Abulhawa's story was riveting; her writing style swept me away in its beauty, more music and poetry than mere prose. I need more stars to judge her book with! Truly excellent. It's taken me almost a week to think through and absorb Mornings in Jenin and consider reading again. I highly recommend this book.
I haven’t shed tears reading in a long time. Reading about Amal’s tortuous life and how she lived with love, fear, passion, anger and eventually peace was breath taking. I read the authors note that this book has been taken from real life although it is fiction. I will never know how it really felt to live in Palestine or but through the author I think she related those awful times in a way I understood. Granted I am American and have taken for granted much that life has given me and I can only hope that I can possess even an inch of love for life as those in this book. Everything I thought was tragic that happened to me feel like nothing now. I hurt and wish there was something I can do so Read this BOOK, it’s amazing! It will open your eyes Past the monotonous news that we see everyday.. that has anesthetized us to the horrors happening around the world.. if we can’t see it or hear it for me at least it doesn’t exist but after reading this now I know it’s real and I can believe that we as in our country probably doesn’t understand enough on how to help. It seems as if our help only makes things worse.. but then perceptions are such a weird thing and so are brains as we learn more and more of how our thoughts and emotions are created. I’ve always believed in stories and I hope that our stories will live on to tell future generations of our benefits and deficits so maybe the next gen (My Children) can make the world a better place. I also think no matter where we live we all suffer in different ways, and we all love in different ways. I hope that I will continue to choose love and my children will too along with acceptance, tolerance and forgiveness. The bombings that keep going on in retaliation.. could stop with forgiveness instead of anger and hate. It doesn’t mean that I condone any behaviors but I understand the emotion behind them. And hope we can move though our separatist and differences to find a commonality between us all.
Stand out book - deserves 10 stars. The media gives a biased version of events and was wonderful to read a version from the side that isn't shown much. This really is an outstanding book and I have told everyone I know that they need to read it. Is one of the stand out best books I have read in the last 10 years and I read a load of books. What an outstanding writer and keep on writing please. Absolutely draws you in, you are there and you want to make it better and reminds you just how lucky you are. Superb writing and just keep on with it please.
I write this review particularly to Americans, like myself, who have been fed a ceaseless stream of one-sided (and often untrue) "news" accounts of the conflict between the state of Israel and Palestinian Arabs. While I had previously been exposed to the Palestinian "side" of the history to some extent, I was still unprepared for the deeply emotional impact of this telling of events. I feel anyone who wishes to offer commentary on the conflict owes it to themselves to read "Mornings in Jenin" and experience life in a refugee camp through the eyes of Palestinians. It will tear your heart out - and well it should.
